Marine Heat Exchangers
BreezeMarine Group partners with FARAD S.A., a Greek heat exchanger manufacturer with more than 45 years of experience since 1979, to supply and repair plate heat exchangers, box coolers, cargo condensers, charge air coolers, tank cleaning heaters and HVAC air coolers — each designed in-house, built from EU-sourced materials, and approved to major marine classification society codes. FARAD is not an agent: every unit is manufactured at its own facilities in Piraeus and Paiania, Greece, by a 90-person team that has completed more than 35,000 heat exchanger installations worldwide.
Engineering Partner: FARAD S.A. Heat Exchangers
FARAD designs and manufactures every heat exchanger in-house, using industry-leading heat exchanger software to optimize thermal and mechanical performance for each customer’s requirements — not off-the-shelf sizing. The company operates on five principles: quality, reliability, flexibility, a problem-free product, and continuous innovation.
- Raw materials sourced from reputable EU manufacturers, with thickness exceeding design code requirements
- Designs follow ASME Division VIII, TEMA, IGC, and relevant classification society codes
- Certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, with DNV GL Maritime Manufacturer Certification and ABS Type Approved Product status
- 3D modeling used to predict installation issues before manufacture, backed by a standard 2-year warranty on all products
- 12-point quality control check carried out on every unit before delivery
- CE marking available for land-based applications
FARAD’s equipment and expertise serve six industries:
Its track record spans commercial vessels, defense applications, nuclear reactors and research centers, including CERN.
Heat Exchanger Solutions for Every Application
Plate Heat Exchangers
Gasketed plate units for heating, cooling, condensation and evaporation duties.
FARAD’s full range spans 19 product lines across five categories — Condensers, Coolers, Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers, Heaters, and other specialized units (including MGO cooling units, LNG/LPG vaporizers and fresh water generators). The six systems above cover BreezeMarine’s core scope — ask us about any other FARAD product.
Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers
Suitable for heating, cooling, condensation and evaporation across marine, industrial, chemical processing, petrochemical, HVAC, power, pharmaceutical and food industry applications. The flexible design fits available space, expands for future capacity, and adjusts as demand changes.
Advantages
- Compact design needs less space than shell & tube, with a large heat exchange surface area
- Expandable by adding plates; controlled temperature even at small differences; special features avoid cross-contamination
- Less volume flow reduces space, piping and pump costs; higher turbulence means less fouling
- Easy maintenance with no extra space needed for dismantling; durable, ergonomic gaskets
Materials & Design Data
- Plates in titanium and Ti-Pd alloy, AISI 304/316L/316TI/904 stainless steel, SMO 254, nickel alloys or pure nickel; titanium recommended for sea water due to corrosion resistance
- Gaskets matched to fluid: NBR for sea water and oils, EPDM for fresh water and food industry, chloroprene for wide temperature ranges, FPM/Viton for high temperature and aggressive chemicals
- Carbon steel or stainless steel frames
Box Coolers
A U-tube bundle heat exchanger that exploits natural convection to provide cooling. Installed inside a sea chest — part of the vessel’s hull — it uses seawater as the coolant fluid, relying on natural or forced circulation.
- Available in various sizes, optimized for the vessel’s sea chest design and the engine’s cooling requirements
- Tube materials: uncoated CuNi 90/10 or aluminum brass with phenolic resin coating; tube sheets in naval brass or CuNi 90/10
- Optional anti-fouling and corrosion protection: ICAF (Impressed Current Anti-Fouling) and ICCP (Impressed Current Cathodic Protection)
- Temperature gauges at cooled fluid inlet and outlet
Cargo Condensers (LPG & NH3)
Used in LPG or ammonia gas carriers to condense vaporized cargo. Heat ingress into the tanks causes vaporization, and the condenser returns the gas to liquid form. Built as shell and tube type units.
- Each condenser is made to order for the specific needs of the application
- Designs follow ASME Division VIII, TEMA, IGC, and the relevant classification society codes
- Optional temperature and pressure gauges, air vent and drain valves, and safety valve
Charge Air Coolers
Charge air coolers for shipboard main engines or diesel generators are one of FARAD’s main products. Cooling the charged air increases the efficiency of internal combustion engines — the same design applies to natural gas and biogas fueled engines.
- A large existing design database covers installation on almost all marine engines; new designs are engineered from engine specifications for new applications
- Tubes in copper nickel 90/10 or 70/30; fins in copper or copper-clad with tin, 0.20 mm thickness
- Sea water (marine type) cooling uses special elastomeric coating inside water covers
- Optimized fin geometry on the air side minimizes fouling and pressure drop while maximizing heat transfer
Tank Cleaning Heaters
Cargo tanks in oil carriers require cleaning with hot water. This heater uses steam to raise seawater temperature to approximately 80°C for effective cleaning — steam flows on the shell side, seawater on the tube side.
- All sizes available on inquiry, optimized to the vessel’s requirements
- Tubes available in steel, aluminum brass or copper nickel 90/10; tube sheets in carbon steel, naval brass or copper nickel 90/10
- Optional water level sight glass, level controller, control valve with actuator, positioner-controller, steam trap and safety relief valve
HVAC Air Coolers
A wide range of HVAC air coolers including water/evaporator coils and recirculation coolers. Recirculation coolers operate in a closed circuit, transferring heat from air to coolant — fresh water or sea water — and are widely used in naval ships.
- New designs built from project specifications using heat exchanger software for dimensioning and heat rejection duty
- Marine-type tubes in copper nickel 90/10 or 70/30 with elastomeric coating inside water covers
- Optimized fin geometry minimizes fouling and pressure drop while maximizing heat transfer
Heat Exchanger Repair, Maintenance & Reverse Engineering
Beyond supplying new equipment, BreezeMarine repairs heat exchangers — including units of FARAD manufacture as well as other brands — following inspection. Where original parts are no longer available, replacements are produced in-house using reverse engineering: the worn or damaged component is fully redesigned and remanufactured to match.
- Cleaning services, including ultrasonic cleaning for heavy-duty residue removal
- Reconditioning repair, based on analysis of design data and operating conditions
- Passivation of copper and copper alloy components, improving corrosion resistance and reducing biofouling
- Shipboard services, with technicians available to install and repair on board
- Optimisation — upgrading existing installations with a better-suited heat exchanger where needed
- In-house research, using dedicated testing facilities and cooperation with accredited external laboratories
Every repair and replacement is tested to specification before delivery. A test certificate, supporting drawings and documentation, and a warranty, user manual and maintenance instructions are provided to the customer.
